WOOFing in New Zealand
WOOFing (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms), fruit picking, farming, and general labour are great ways to get to know locals and engage in the local economy while VanPacking in New Zealand.
Know the Economy
Kiwifruit is a cornerstone export from New Zealand. It is picked, checked, packed, and shipped largely to Asian markets and across the globe. The season ranges from March to May, as the weather cools. It is a good time to enter the country for work because this is on the back end of the VanPacking season (vehicles are cheaper). Kiwifruit are grown across the North Island, but Northland, Tauranga, and Gisbourne have the largest orchards.
Grapes are turned into wine which is another key export from New Zealand. Harvesting and processing are a great way to contribute to the economy and earn spending money while VanPacking. Locations like Marlborough and Central Otago where the largest vineyards exist are beautiful. However, they can be cold in winter months, so come prepared.
Farming is another avenue for those that do not mind harder labour. Raising fences, herding cattle and sheep, and other general labour is required year-round across in New Zealand.
Know the Seasons
The peaks for labour are generally aligned with harvests. They are the best opportunity to engage in work, but the worst time to communicate with people in the sector (it is when they are busiest). Plan ahead and communicate ahead to ensure you have positions available upon arrival. It is easy to find work in New Zealand during peak harvests.
Know the Locations
Plan, plan, plan. If you align your travel to the work availability then it is very easy to travel New Zealand while earning money. The locations of orchards and vineyards are generally quite remote and incredibly beautiful. WOOFing will expose you to locals and other tourists to find the best destinations too.
Connect and Network
We recommend reaching out before you travel. VanPacking Facebook groups and WOOFing websites are the best ports of call.
